This was my first singlespeed race, and my first mtb race this year, so there was potential for a lot of misery and a poor finish. But it didn't happen, and I had one of my better races in a long time. The course was new for this year and was a great singlespeed course with nearly no climbing, a lot of singletrack, and some banked hairpin turns that you could carve through. There were also some muddy and rocky sections, and I made up a lot of ground by running through them.

There were about 10-12 singlespeeds at the start, and I was soon very close to last. I felt good the entire race and passed people the entire time and finished 4th. My body started aching right at the very end, but my last lap was only about two minutes slower than the first two. I'm still sore in the arms, upper back and legs! I checked my time against the expert class and I would have come in third in my Veteran 1 age group. Maybe I need to race my SS in the regular class! I'll definitely race singlespeed again!
